FAQ

Some of the most commonly asked questions about our sail are listed below. If you don't see what you need here, just contact us directly!

Why would I put a sail on my kayak or canoe? Why use a Cachalote sail?

Speed. Distance. Less effort. Pleasure.  A sail can push you along the same course with less effort.

Most people who buy the sail bring it every time they paddle and start to look for wind rather than try to avoid the wind.

What if I have no sailing experience or sailing knowledge?

You need zero sailing experience to use our Cachalote sail. Guaranteed.

How fast and far can I go?

You can go faster with a sail than you can by simply paddling. Our sail provides a constant force where paddling is a series of on and off pushes. More important, you will go farther than usual, with less work than before.

Is kayak sailing hard?

No. Kayak sailing is easy to do. Anybody that is comfortable in a canoe or kayak will catch on to kayak sailing. Most people will find sailing in the light wind very easy to do with just a little practice.

What wind speeds does the Sail really work well in?

Winds from about 3 knots to around 12 work well. Its automatic power limiter derived from its flexible structure facilitates the folding of the sail in case of heavy winds.

How do I steer while sailing?

It's pretty much the same as steering without a sail. Use the paddle as a rudder and stabilizer.

What material goes into the making of the Cachalote Sail?

Rip-stop polyester is the same material used for yacht racing spinnakers. The flexible perimeter batten is made of Heavy-duty fiberglass that will not rust, corrode or break unless seriously abused. The window is cut of sturdy clear plastic vinyl that is long-lasting.
